Mortality and associated risk factors for older adults admitted to the Emergency Department: A hospital cohort
BMC Geriatrics Jun 22, 2018
Garcia-Pena C, et al. - In a hospital cohort study, researchers investigated mortality and factors associated with mortality in patients over 60 years of age who were admitted to the Emergency Departments of two general hospitals in Mexico City. For these subjects, they measured all causes of mortality from the time of Emergency Department admission until a follow-up home visit after discharge. They used Kaplan-Meier curves to assess survival functions and they also carried out a multivariate analysis using Cox regression models to derive hazard ratios (HR). They found 306 (21.8%) of a total of 1406 older adults did not survive. Length of stay and variables related to frailty status were identified as risk factors for mortality.
