Mortality among solid organ waitlist candidates during COVID‐19 in the United States
American Journal of Transplantation Mar 06, 2021
Miller J, Wey A, Musgrave D, et al. - Researchers sought to determine how COVID‐19 affected solid organ waiting list mortality in the United States. In addition, they compared the effects across patient demographics (eg, race, age, gender) and donation service areas. Higher kidney waiting list mortality was noted after than before the national emergency. For liver, pancreas, lung, and heart, no significantly different hazard of waitlist mortality was observed before and after COVID‐19. Notable variability in disparities were reported for kidney candidates across donation service areas. Increased waiting list mortality was reported for only Blacks vs Whites for kidney candidates.
