Mortality among people with regular or problematic use of amphetamines: A systematic review and meta-analysis
Addiction Jun 16, 2019
Stockings E, et al. - Researchers performed this systematic review and meta-analysis of cohorts of people with problematic use or dependence on amphetamines with the aim to generate pooled estimates of their mortality risks. They focused on all-cause mortality as well as specific causes of death in these cohorts. They identified 4,240 relevant papers; of these, 30 were eligible, reporting on 25 cohorts. North America, several Nordic countries, and Asia-Pacific had the cohorts (n=35-74,139). Observations revealed an elevated risk of a range of causes of mortality among people with regular or dependent amphetamine use compared with people without regular or dependent amphetamine use. Pooled cause-specific mortality rates were: drug poisoning, 0.14 per 100 person-years (PY); cardiovascular disease, 0.13 per 100PY; suicide, 0.20 per 100PY; accidental injury, 0.20 per 100PY and homicide, 0.03 per 100PY.
