Morbidity after pediatric tonsillotomy vs tonsillectomy: A population-based cohort study
The Laryngoscope Nov 03, 2019
Odhagen E, et al. - Based on data from the Swedish National Patient Register (NPR), researchers conducted this retrospective population-based cohort study to compare and assess morbidity after pediatric tonsillectomy (TE) and tonsillotomy (TT) performed due to tonsil-related upper airway obstruction. All patients between 1 and 12 years of age who were enrolled in the NPR between January 1, 2007, and December 31, 2015, and who had an isolated tonsil surgery (± adenoidectomy) solely for upper airway obstruction were involved. A total of 35,060 patients were included, 23,447 of whom had TT and 11,613 of whom had TE. Findings suggested an association of TT with a statistically significantly lower risk of postoperative complications than TE when performed in children to correct tonsil-related upper airway obstruction. For all outcome variables, ie, readmission to the hospital due to bleeding, RTT, readmission due to any reason, and postoperative contact with healthcare for any reason, statistically significant differences were found.
