Morbid obesity and mortality in patients with VTE
Chest Apr 15, 2020
Giorgi-Pierfranceschi M, Núñez JJL, Monreal M, et al. - Researchers investigated if and how morbid obesity impacts mortality in patients receiving anticoagulant therapy for VTE. The RIETE (Registro Informatizado Enfermedad TromboEmbólica) registry yielded data of 1,642 patients with VTE and morbid obesity and 14,848 with normal weight. Among these, cancer was reported in 245 (5.5%) and 1,397 (11.6%), respectively. Per outcomes, it was concluded that morbidly obese patients had one-third lower risk for death during anticoagulation vs those with normal weight among patients with VTE; this reduced risk was observed independent of the presence of cancer.
