Monoclonal gammopathy in rheumatic diseases
Clinical Rheumatology Mar 31, 2018
Yang Y, et al. - Experts evaluated the clinical spectrum, laboratory characteristics, and outcomes of monoclonal gammopathy (MG) in patients with rheumatic diseases. They observed MG in patients with various rheumatic disorders, most commonly in Sjogren syndrome. More than half of the 41 patients presented with high ESR, albumin/globulin inversion, rheumatoid factor positivity, hypergammaglobulinemia, and hypocomplementemia. An association between the presence of MG and higher disease activity might be seen. Findings suggested the development of hematological neoplasias including multiple myeloma (MM) and lymphoma. Hence, in patients with rheumatic diseases, screening for MG and close monitoring for potential malignant transformation as required, was suggested.
