Monitoring of a hip surveillance programme protects infants from radiation and surgical intervention
The Bone & Joint Journal Apr 03, 2020
Milligan DJ, et al. - This study evaluated the performance of services for developmental dysplasia of the hip (DDH) in Northern Ireland and distinguish potential improvements to improve quality of service and plan for the future. A prospective observational study was designed to include all infants treated for DDH between 2011 and 2017. The included children who underwent clinical evaluation and radiological investigation as per the regional surveillance policy. They interrogated regional radiology data to evaluate the use of ultrasound and ionizing radiation for this population. The results of this study displayed that enhancing compliance with the regional infant hip screening protocols led to reduction in operative methods and lowered the number of pelvic radiographs of infants. For DDH, the performance monitoring of screening programmes is necessary to serve a quality service.
