Mon2 predicts poor outcome in ST-elevation myocardial infarction

Journal of Internal Medicine Mar 18, 2019

Shantsila E, et al. - In this investigation, researchers established the correlation between monocyte subsets, their phagocytic and nuclear factor κB (NFκB) activity, and outcomes in ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI). In 245 patients with STEMI who were followed up for a median of 46 months, monocyte subsets and their phagocytic activity and intracellular levels of inhibitory κB kinase β (marker of NFκB activity) were measured via flow cytometry. After STEMI onset and at 6-month follow-up, Mon2 (CD14++CD16+CCR2+) levels were found to be related to lower ejection fraction. In patients with STEMI, abnormal Mon2 characteristics were found to have a unique association with poor outcome. The relation of Mon2 with heart failure occurrence was strongly and independently associated with functional status, which might have potential therapeutic implications.
