Mohs micrographic surgery vs wide local excision for melanoma in situ: Analysis of a nationwide database
International Journal of Dermatology Feb 08, 2019
Phan K, et al. - In this retrospective analysis of the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results (SEER) cancer registry, 24,515 cases of wide local excision (WLE) were examined to study comparatively, the survival rates following WLE vs Mohs micrographic surgery (MMS) surgery for melanoma in situ (MIS). They observed a significantly higher proportion of elderly candidates of age ≥75 years in the MMS group as compared to WLE (23.3% vs 15.3%). A higher proportion of females was noticed for WLE in comparison with MMS (48.8% vs 40%). They reported no significant difference in cancer-specific survival and overall survival in both groups, after adjustment for confounding factors.
