Modified open technique for laparoscopic gastrostomy tube placement results in more leakage post operatively than Seldinger technique
American Journal of Surgery Jul 26, 2019
Kvasnovsky CL, et al. - Researchers examined 92 gastrostomy tube (GT) placed from 12/2016 to 06/2018 [56 were placed using modified open (60.9%) technique while others were performed using a Seldinger technique (ST)] to assess if the modified open technique results in more complications. They noted granulation tissue development in 34 children (37.0%), tube dislodgment in 18 children (19.6%), and a site infection in 6 children (6.5%), with no difference depending on technique. Leakage developed in 2 children (5.6%) following ST, and 15 children (26.8%) following the modified open technique (MOT) indicating significantly more leaks following MOT. They recommend surgeons choosing MOT to be careful of the size of gastrotomy at time of surgery, as this may lead to raised complications.
