Modifiable risk factors and the development of psoriatic arthritis in people with psoriasis
British Journal of Dermatology Sep 05, 2019
Green A, Shaddick G, Charlton R, et al. - Using data from the Clinical Practice Research Datalink, researchers explored the connections between obesity, changes in BMI, alcohol consumption and smoking status, and the development of psoriatic arthritis (PsA), a progressive and often destructive joint disease affecting approximately 20% of people with psoriasis, in people with psoriasis. Ninety thousand one hundred eighty-nine incident cases of psoriasis were identified of whom 1,409 had a subsequent record of PsA diagnosis in this incident psoriasis cohort. According to findings, an increased risk of PsA in patients with psoriasis was linked to increased BMI and moderate drinking but not heavy drinking or smoking status. Importantly, the authors have shown that weight loss can lead to a decline in the risk of developing PsA.
