Modifiable risk factors and the development of psoriatic arthritis in people with psoriasis
British Journal of Dermatology Jun 23, 2019
Green A, et al. - In people with psoriasis, researchers studied connections between obesity, changes in body mass index (BMI), alcohol intake and smoking status and the development of psoriatic arthritis (PsA) using generalised additive models. In this incident psoriasis cohort, 90,189 incident cases of psoriasis were identified of whom 1,409 had a subsequent record of PsA diagnosis. According to findings, an increased risk of PsA in patients with psoriasis was associated with increased BMI and moderate drinking but not heavy drinking or smoking status. Importantly, the authors have shown that weight loss can lead to a decline in the risk of developing PsA.
