Modifiable determinants of exercise use in a diverse ethnic population with osteoarthritis
Arthritis Care & Research Oct 23, 2019
Vina ER, Hannon MJ, Hausmann LRM, et al. - Among patients with knee/hip osteoarthritis (OA), researchers determined the extent of ethnic differences in the use of exercise for therapy and identified relevant modifiable determinants of exercise use. According to findings, Hispanic candidates (n = 130) were less likely to have private medical insurance or to report having excellent/very good health compared with non-Hispanic candidates (n = 232). In addition, they were less likely to report using exercise for OA treatment in the last 6 months. Overall, the authors concluded that Hispanics were less likely to exercise for OA treatment among patients with knee/hip OA. Increased knowledge about the health benefits of exercise and enhanced familiarity with exercise as an OA treatment may increase the use of exercise.
