Modifiable analgesia-/anesthesia-related factors and risk of severe gastrointestinal complications after lower extremity total joint arthroplasty: A nationwide analysis
Journal of Arthroplasty May 06, 2020
Bekeris J, Fiasconaro M, Valle AGD, et al. - This study was conducted to present the epidemiology of severe GI complications after total hip and knee arthroplasty (THA/TKA) and correlations with anesthesia- and/or analgesia-related factors. In this study, 591,865 THA and 1,139,616 TKA cases were included in the study (Premier Healthcare claims database; 2006-2016). Gastrointestinal complications and related emergency surgeries within 30 days after THA/TKA were the main outcomes. After THA/TKA, rare, but devastating, acute GI complications (requiring surgery) may be positively effected by a variety of modifiable anesthesia-/analgesia-related interventions.
