Moderate-intensity aerobic and resistance exercise is safe and favorably influences body composition in patients with quiescent inflammatory bowel disease: A randomized controlled cross-over trial
BMC Gastroenterology Feb 18, 2019
Cronin O, et al. - In patients with inflammatory bowel disease, researchers determined whether an aerobic and resistance exercise program could safely achieve changes in body composition. They performed a randomized, cross-over trial of 8 weeks combined aerobic and resistance training on body composition evaluated by Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometry. In physically unfit patients with quiescent inflammatory bowel disease, moderate-intensity combined aerobic and resistance training is safe and can quickly achieve favorable changes in body composition without adverse effects. There were no clinically significant alterations in the α- and β-diversity of gut microbiota and related metabolic pathways. During the exercise intervention, no patients experienced a deterioration in disease activity scores.
