Moderate alcohol consumption and depression - A longitudinal population-based study in Sweden
Acta Psychiatrica Scandinavica Apr 19, 2019
Gémes K, et al. - Given the complexity of the inter-relationship between alcohol consumption and depression, researchers examined the influence of alcohol consumption on depression risk while accounting for the potential bi-directionality of the relationship. In the PART study, a total of 10,441 individuals participated in 1998-2000; 8,622 in 2001-2003 and 5,228 in 2010. Findings revealed a higher depression risk among non-drinkers vs light drinkers (≤7 drinks/week). The depression risk in consumers of 7-14 drinks/week was comparable to that seen in light drinkers. Compared to non-hazardous alcohol consumption, hazardous drinking was correlated with a higher risk of depression.
