Modelling potential cost savings from use of real-time continuous glucose monitoring in pregnant women with type 1 diabetes
Diabetic Medicine Jul 11, 2019
Murphy HR, et al. - Researchers created a budget impact model to approximate possible cost savings in women with type 1 diabetes correlated with the use of real-time continuous glucose monitoring (RT-CGM) during pregnancy. From published literature, national tariffs, and device manufacturers, information on pregnancy, neonatal complication rates, and related costs were obtained. Data revealed that glucose monitoring costs were £588 for SMBG alone and £1,820 for RT-CGM. Findings suggested that considerable cost savings could result from routine use of RT-CGM by pregnant women with type 1 diabetes, primarily through lower neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) admissions and shorter NICU care duration. Recent improvements in sensor accuracy and duration may result in considerable cost savings with the use of RT-CGM.
