Mobile health access and use among individuals with or at risk for cardiovascular disease: 2018 Health Information National Trends Survey (HINTS)
Journal of the American Heart Association Dec 18, 2019
Shan R, et al. - Among individuals with or at risk for cardiovascular disease (CVD), researchers performed this study to evaluate the prevalence of mobile health (mHealth) access and usage, as well as the link between CVD risk and mHealth uptake. For this purpose, they utilized data from 3,248 adults in the 2018 Health Information National Trends Survey. Stating a heart condition, diabetes mellitus, hypertension, and/or current smoking (n = 1,903) defined CVD risk. The chance of using a wearable device was more in those carrying CVD risk vs those without CVD risk among men, while women exhibited no difference. Findings revealed a high prevalence of smartphone ownership but incomplete mHealth uptake in the nationally representative sample examined in this study. A link was identified between having CVD or its risk factors and sharing information from smartphone/wearables, indicating the potential to leverage clinically verified mHealth interventions for CVD prevention.
