Misoprostol for open myomectomy: A systematic review and meta‐analysis of randomised control trials
BJOG: An International Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology Aug 04, 2020
Wali S, Balfoussia D, Touqmatchi D, et al. - Given a significant risk of myomectomy with the potential need for hysterectomy in correltion with excessive blood loss, researchers here examined the effectiveness of preoperative misoprostol vs placebo at open myomectomy on intra‐ and postoperative outcomes. Searching PubMed, Cochrane, Scopus, MEDLINE and EMBASE, they included eight randomised control studies of women undergoing open myomectomy for symptomatic fibroids who were given either misoprostol or placebo preoperatively; these studies included a total of 385 patients, of which 192 received misoprostol. Findings from these moderate‐ to high‐quality studies establish that misoprostol reduces blood loss and necessity for blood transfusion at open myomectomy. They emphasize administering this low‐cost and readily available drug routinely prior to open myomectomy to improve clinical outcomes.
