Joshi YB, et al. - The authors aimed to investigate whether mismatch negativity impairment was correlated with deficits in identifying real-world environmental sounds in schizophrenia. Impairments in early auditory information processing in schizophrenia accounted for significant proportions of variance in the ability to identify real-world, functionally relevant environmental sounds. They supported the view that interventions targeting deficits in low-level auditory sensory processing could also affect more complex cognitive brain processes relevant to psychosocial disability.
