Minimal effective weight-based dosing of ondansetron to reduce hypotension in cesarean section under spinal anesthesia: A randomized controlled superiority trial

BMC Anesthesiology Aug 21, 2018

Oofuvong M, et al. - In this prospective, triple-blinded, parallel group, randomized controlled trial, researchers investigated the optimal dose of ondansetron needed based on the patient’s weight to attenuate hypotension after spinal anesthesia for cesarean section. They randomized 228 pregnant women to receive either normal saline (group NS) or ondansetron 0.05 mg/kg (group O1) or ondansetron 0.1 mg/kg (group O2) intravenously 5 min before induction of spinal anesthesia. They compared changes in blood pressure and heart rate using the generalized estimating equations method and assessed maternal and neonatal complications. They found no reduction in the incidence of hypotension as a result of administering ondansetron 0.05 mg/kg or 0.1 mg/kg before spinal anesthesia.
