Midterm outcomes of early vs late surgery for infective endocarditis with neurologic complications: A meta-analysis
Journal of Cardiothoracic Surgery Mar 31, 2021
Yokoyama Y, Goto T., et al. - The most common and fatal complications of infective endocarditis (IE) include cerebral infarction (CI), and there is uncertainty concerning the timing of surgery for IE with neurologic complications. In patients with IE, researchers sought to compare mid- to long-term outcomes of early and late surgery as well as neurologic complications via a meta-analysis. A total of five eligible studies were identified for inclusion, which were all observational studies and involved a total of 624 patients with IE and neurologic complications. Per outcomes, the early and late surgery groups had comparable mortality and recurrence rates. Researchers recommend individualizing the optimal timing of surgery on a case-to-case basis.
