Midlife wealth mobility and long-term cardiovascular health
JAMA Cardiology Oct 17, 2021
Machado S, Sumarsono A, Vaduganathan M, et al. - Findings show an association of midlife wealth mobility with incident cardiovascular events, independent of baseline wealth.
This is a cohort study of 5,579 US adults (50 years or older) without cardiovascular disease who participated in the Health and Retirement Study.
Lower cardiovascular risk in relation to higher initial wealth (per quintile) was evident (adjusted hazard ratio [aHR] per quintile, 0.89 [95% CI, 0.84-0.95]).
Those with upward wealth mobility (by at least 1 quintile) were found to have independently lower cardiovascular risk (aHR, 0.84) relative to participants with stable wealth from 50 to 64 years of age, and those with downward wealth mobility carried higher cardiovascular risk (aHR, 1.15) after 65 years of age.
