Midlife vascular risk factors and midlife cognitive status in relation to prevalence of mild cognitive impairment and dementia in later life: The Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities Study
Alzheimer's & Dementia Oct 24, 2018
Knopman DS, et al. - Researchers conducted this study to analyze the interplay between midlife vascular risk factors and midlife cognitive function with later life mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and dementia (DEM). They assessed cardiovascular risk factors and cognition in midlife, ages 45–64 years, in 5,995 participants in the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities Study. Findings suggested an association of midlife diabetes and hypertension with later life MCI and DEM. In addition, low midlife cognition function was related to greater likelihood of late-life MCI or DEM. The findings suggested that vascular risk factors and midlife cognition independently forecast later MCI or DEM.
