Middle ear pathologies in adults living with human immunodeficiency virus: A systematic review

Sebothoma B, et al. - Utilizing Medline, CINAHL, PubMed, and Psych Info, researchers conducted a systematic review of literature from January 1982 to December 2018 to investigate and document published evidence reflecting trends in middle ear pathologies in adults living with HIV. Dozens of articles met the criteria for inclusion. Although very few studies have identified middle ear pathologies in adults living with HIV, the available studies have adequately established a correlation between HIV and middle ear disease in this population, and have shown that a number of factors influence the rate of occurrence. Key among these is the type of measure used for evaluation. Careful analysis of middle ear pathologies in this population through well-controlled research designs involving various assessment measures. It is important to use case-control and longitudinal designs to determine differences between groups, and to determine the onset time and progression of middle ear pathologies.
