Mid-term prognosis of type I Boston keratoprosthesis reimplantation
British Journal of Ophthalmology Oct 17, 2020
Bouhout S, et al. - Researchers conducted this retrospective observational case series to investigate the mid-term visual and anatomical prognosis of patients who need reimplantation of a second Boston keratoprosthesis type 1 (B-KPro). The sample consisted of 122 patients (141 eyes) who received a B-KPro at a single institution. The research included eyes that underwent a second B-KPro. According to findings, 17 eyes (12%) needed B-KPro reimplantation. For eyes with B-KPro failure, B-KPro reimplantation is a potentially sight- and globe-saving procedure, but the prognosis is guarded. In a third of patients, B-KPro reimplantation can salvage ambulatory vision while another third of patients progress to loss of light perception. The significant obstacles to visual rehabilitation were retroprosthetic membrane and retinal detachment, while recurrent corneal melt was responsible for most cases of anatomical failure.
