MicroRNA-related genetic variants associated with overall survival of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma

Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention Jun 15, 2018

Wilkins OM, et al. - Whether microRNA-related single nucleotide polymorphisms (miR-SNPs) are associated with head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) survival was evaluated using a genome-scale approach and independent patient populations in a two-stage approach. To provide functional insight for the identified and replicated associations, researchers leveraged miRNA interaction databases and miRNA expression data from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA). Novel miR-SNPs associated with HNSCC survival were identified. In oral cavity cancer, an association of rs1816158 (located within long-non-coding RNA MIR100HG) with overall survival was observed. A significant link was noted between the expression of MIR100HG-embedded microRNA, miR-100, and overall survival in an independent cohort of HNSCC cases.
