Methamphetamine use and heart failure: Prevalence, risk factors, and predictors

Richards JR, et al. - Researchers here compared methamphetamine users who develop heart failure to those who do not and determined predictors. Findings revealed a significantly higher prevalence of heart failure among methamphetamine-positive patients than the general Emergency Department population who are methamphetamine-negative or not tested. Methamphetamine users who developed heart failure were more frequently male, older, White, former smokers, and have higher creatinine, heart and respiratory rates. Greater biventricular dysfunction, dimensions, and higher pulmonary arterial pressures were observed in this subgroup of patients.
