Lappin J, et al. - Researchers conducted a review exploring clinical implications of an association between methamphetamine (MA) use and Parkinson’s Disease (PD). They recognized that MA use may be an initiating event in the development of PD and parkinsonism, in addition to other risk factors an individual may have. Signs of prodromal and emerging PD among methamphetamine users should be met with vigilance by clinicians. The long lag time between exposure to MA and onset of PD, the potential to recover from neurotoxic effects, and tobacco smoking may be protective among MA users.
