Metformin use in obese mothers is associated with improved cardiovascular profile in the offspring
American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology Feb 07, 2020
Panagiotopoulou O, Syngelaki A, Georgiopoulos G, et al. - In the Metformin use Obese Pregnant women trial, reduced adverse pregnancy outcomes were observed without any effect on birthweight. Researchers here examined if the cardiovascular profile and body composition in the offspring of obese mothers improve in correlation to prenatal exposure to metformin. From the Metformin use in Obese-Pregnant women trial, 151 children (aged 3.9±1.0 years) were assessed for body composition, peripheral blood pressure, and arterial pulse wave velocity. Among these children, 77 had prenatal exposure to metformin. The analysis revealed lower central hemodynamic and cardiac diastolic indices in children of obese mothers who were prenatally exposed to metformin vs those exposed to placebo. Results thereby suggest that in obese pregnant women, the administration of metformin may potentially have a beneficial cardiovascular effect for their offspring.
