Metformin's impact on statin-associated muscle symptoms: An analysis of ACCORD study data and research materials from the NHLBI Biologic Specimen and Data Repository Information Coordinating Center
Diabetes, Obesity and Metabolism May 03, 2018
Carris NW, et al. - Experts ascertained if metformin was correlated with reduced muscle pain. A comparison was performed of the muscle pain between patients using a statin or both a statin and metformin at baseline. Data demonstrated fewer reports of muscle cramps (35%) and leg/calve pain while walking (40%) with statins and metformin compared to statin only. A 22% odds reduction was discovered for muscle cramps and a 29% odds reduction for leg/calve pain while walking. Metformin led to a possible reduction in the risk of non-severe statin muscle pain.
