Metformin, aspirin and statin and risk of cancer: A population-based study in Thailand
Journal of Global Oncology Oct 22, 2019
Oranratnachai S, Thongmung N, Phetchoo N, et al. - Via a population-based retrospective study performed in Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) 1 and 2 databases, which have carried the 27-year and 15-year follow-up time, respectively, experts examined the relationship between aspirin, metformin, or statin and the risk of cancer. Among 2,508 and 2,731 individuals in EGAT1 and 2, the incidence of cancer was 8.3% and 3.5%, respectively. Aspirin use was significantly correlated with the rising risk of cancer; however, metformin and statin exhibited a bias of greater risk of cancer. Moreover, these drugs may be associated with the cancer metabolome pathway which, in turn, may play a significant role in carcinogenesis. Nonetheless, the association of aspirin, metformin, or statin use with the risk of cancer requires furthers study in longer follow-ups and larger cohorts.
