Metered‐dose inhalers vs nebulization for the delivery of albuterol for acute exacerbations of wheezing or asthma in children: A systematic review with meta‐analysis
Pediatric Pulmonology Sep 22, 2020
Payares‐Salamanca L, Contreras‐Arrieta S, Florez‐García V, et al. - Researchers sought to compare the response to albuterol delivered through nebulization (NEB) with albuterol delivered through metered‐dose inhalers with a spacer (MDI+S) in pediatric patients with asthma exacerbations by conducting an electronic search in MEDLINE/PubMed, EMBASE, Ovid and ClinicalTrials. Fifteen studies (n = 2,057) met criteria for inclusion. In terms of hospital admission, no significant differences have been observed between the two albuterol delivery methods. The data presented in this work showed a significant decline in the pulmonary index score and a significantly lower rise in heart rate when albuterol was delivered through MDI+S than when it was delivered through NEB.
