Metabolic syndrome in patients with alopecia areata: A case‐control study
Dermatologic Therapy May 19, 2021
Abdollahimajd F, Niknezhad N, Bahreini N, et al. - Researchers conducted the study for assessing metabolic syndrome prevalence in patients with alopecia areata compared with controls. Sixty eligible patients with alopecia areata and 60 healthy individuals who attended the referral dermatology clinics from 2015 to 2017 were registered. The two groups were compared in terms of the prevalence of metabolic syndrome and its components. Patch type, ophiasis, alopecia totalis, and alopecia universalis were all clinical manifestations of alopecia areata. The presence of metabolic syndrome was significantly linked to the abdominal circumference. Although there was no statistically significant link between alopecia areata and metabolic syndrome, some metabolic syndrome components were more prevalent in these patients. Patients with alopecia areata may be at a higher risk of developing metabolic syndrome in the future.
