Metabolic syndrome in native populations living at high altitude: A cross-sectional survey in Derong, China

Huang X, Hu Y, Du L, et al. - Researchers conducted a cross-sectional survey of 5,053 adults living in Derong from an elevation of 2060 to 3820 m was taken out in 2013 in order to determine the prevalence of metabolic syndrome and its people components at high altitude. In Derong, China, the overall prevalence of metabolic syndrome was 3.6%. At high altitude, obesity, and hypertension were more prevalent among adults in comparison with dyslipidaemia and hyperglycemia. In comparison with countryside residents, the prevalence of metabolic syndrome was more leading in the township. It was noted that in Derong, adult residents hypertension and obesity were more prevalent than the prevalence of metabolic syndrome. And in township and male residents metabolic syndrome was more intense. Moreover, these people also have a greater risk of metabolic syndrome. Accordingly, it was important to develop a national strategy for the prevention and treatment of metabolic syndrome for the high-risk populations at high altitudes in China.
