Metabolic syndrome exponentially increases the risk of adverse outcomes in operative diverticulitis

Journal of Surgical Research Dec 14, 2019

Jehan F, Zeeshan M, Con J, et al. - Researchers examined how metabolic syndrome (MS) affects outcomes in operative acute diverticulitis patients. BMI > 30 kg/m2, hypertension, and diabetes defined MS. The (2012-2015) NSQIP database yielded data of 4,572 patients with acute diverticulitis who underwent surgery; these had a mean BMI of 29 ± 10 kg/m2. Metabolic syndrome was reported in 14.6% (275) of obese patients. Outcomes suggest that patients with MS experience higher adverse events after surgery for diverticulitis than those with obesity, hypertension, or diabetes alone. Further, patients with MS have a more prolonged recovery duration and have higher rates of complications, readmissions, and mortality.
