Metabolic syndrome and time to pregnancy: A retrospective study of nulliparous women

BJOG: An International Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology Feb 13, 2019

Grieger JA, et al. - In this multi-centre (Australia, United Kingdom, New Zealand, Ireland) retrospective cohort study, researchers investigated the association between metabolic syndrome (MetS), time to pregnancy (TTP), and infertility. Further, they determined associations between individual and increasing number of MetS components, TTP, and infertility, and assessed if these relationships differ by obesity (BMI, <30kg/m2 vs ≥30kg/m2). They collected data on retrospectively reported TTP (number of months to conceive), and a blood sample to assess metabolic health between 14-16 weeks’ gestation from 5519 low-risk nulliparous pregnant women. Of these, MetS was noted in 684 (12.4%). These women displayed a 62% greater risk for infertility irrespective of the obesity status. The main individual components associated with risk for infertility comprised reduced HDL-C and raised TG. These findings suggest the relation of MetS with longer TTP and infertility, independent of obesity.
