Metabolic syndrome and risk of ovarian and fallopian tube cancer in the United States: An analysis of linked SEER–Medicare data
Gynecologic Oncology Nov 10, 2019
Michels KA, et al. - Researchers assessed ovarian/fallopian tube cancer risk in correlation with metabolic syndrome and its components (obesity, impaired fasting glucose, hypertension, HDL cholesterol, triglycerides), using a case-control study within the US-based Surveillance, Epidemiology and End Results (SEER)–Medicare linked database. Reduced ovarian cancer risk was observed in women with metabolic syndrome vs women not meeting the diagnostic criteria. An increased risk was observed in relation to having one or two syndrome components, but not in patients having ≥ 3, vs women without any components. Increased risks were observed in relation to hypertension and high triglycerides (the most prevalent components among women without metabolic syndrome). Findings are suggestive of possible modest links of specific metabolic syndrome components with ovarian cancer. These links differed in direction and the overall link between metabolic syndrome and ovarian cancer was affected by the prevalence of the components.
