Metabolic syndrome and prostate cancer in Afro-Caribbean men
The Prostate Dec 19, 2021
Lefebvre F, Blanchet-Deverly A, Michineau L, et al. - Analyzing the association between metabolic syndrome (MetS) and prostate cancer (PCa) in Afro-Caribbean men, it was realized that diversity of obesity criteria employed led to high variability in MetS and this could explain the discordant associations reported in the literature.
In this study of 285 patients with incident cases of PCa attending the University Hospital of Guadeloupe (French West Indies), the goal was to assess the prevalence of MetS and its association with adverse clinicopathological features and the risk of biochemical recurrence (BCR) post-radical prostatectomy.
A great variation in MetS prevalence, from 31.6% to 16.4%, was evident when a waist circumference ≥94 cm or body mass index were used as obesity surrogates, respectively.
Irrespective of the obesity criteria used, no significant associations existed between MetS and the risk of adverse pathological features or BCR.
