Metabolic syndrome: A major risk factor for morbidity & mortality in severely injured trauma patients
Journal of the American College of Surgeons Nov 02, 2019
Tracy BM, Wilson JM, Staley C, et al. - Researchers examined how metabolic syndrome (MetS) affects the risk of morbidity and mortality in severely injured trauma patients via performing a retrospective review of 4,491 trauma patients; of these, 100 (2.2%) had MetS. Findings suggest the infrequent occurrence of MetS in this severely injured trauma population. However, its occurrence was noted to be strongly associated with increasing length of stay as well as cardiac, pulmonary, infectious, and renal complications. Further, they identified the significant and independent value of MetS in predicting death and hence it should be recognized early to aid prompt multidisciplinary treatment.
