Metabolic risk factors associated with early onset colorectal adenocarcinoma: A case-control study at Kaiser Permanente Southern California
Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers & Prevention Jul 28, 2021
Schumacher AJ, Chen Q, Attaluri V, et al. - Researchers sought to determine if metabolic abnormalities behave as risk factors for early onset colorectal cancer (eoCRC) adenocarcinoma. They selected invasive colorectal adenocarcinoma cases diagnosed between ages 15-49 from 2008-2018 at Kaiser Permanente Southern California. This analysis involved 1,032 cases and 5,128 controls. Colorectal adenocarcinoma risk was found to be significantly related to obesity, but not to diabetes, hypertension or dyslipidemia. Analysis stratified according to tumor location revealed a significant link of obesity with the risk of colon adenocarcinoma, however, its relation with rectal adenocarcinoma was less clear. Overall, obesity was shown to be related to risk for eoCRC adenocarcinoma.
