Metabolic effects of betaine: A randomized clinical trial of betaine supplementation in prediabetes
Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism Aug 11, 2018
Grizales AM, et al. - Researchers performed a 12-week, parallel arm, randomized, double-masked, placebo-controlled trial to evaluate metabolic impacts of oral betaine in patients with prediabetes who are obese. For this investigation, people with obesity and prediabetes were randomly assigned to receive betaine 3,300 mg orally twice daily for 10 days, then 4,950 mg twice daily for 12 weeks or placebo. In persons with prediabetes, dimethylglycine (DMG) accumulation supports DMG dehydrogenase as rate limiting for betaine metabolism. They found that betaine had a little metabolic effect.
