Meta-analysis of the influence of lifestyle changes for preoperative weight loss on surgical outcomes
British Journal of Surgery Feb 22, 2019
Roman M, et al. - Researchers undertook a systematic review and aggregate data meta-analysis of RCTs and cohort studies to examine the influence of preoperative weight loss on clinical outcomes in surgical patients with clinically significant obesity. They analyzed a total of 6060 patients from four RCTs and 12 cohort studies, all from European and North American centers, indicating advantages of limited preoperative weight loss. Preoperative weight loss interventions did not result in a reduction in perioperative mortality and morbidity but a reduction in the event rate. In addition, a shorter hospital stay (by 27%) was noted in the weight loss groups.
