Meta-analysis of the effect of preoperative atrial fibrillation on outcomes after left ventricular assist device implantation
The American Journal of Cardiology Apr 16, 2019
Usman MS, et al. - Researchers analyzed 7 studies including 5,658 patients, to evaluate the safety as well as efficacy of left ventricular assist device (LVAD) implantation in atrial fibrillation (AF) patients. The studies reporting clinical outcomes in patients undergoing LVAD implantation in relation to pre-operative AF were identified from Medline and Scopus and were included in this meta-analysis. All-cause mortality, thromboembolic events and bleeding were considered as outcomes of interest. In LVADs recipients having concomitant AF, a significantly increased risk of gastrointestinal bleeding was reported. However, all-cause mortality, stroke, or thromboembolic events in these patients were not significantly influenced by AF.
