Meta-analysis of neurocognition in young psychosis patients with current cannabis use
Journal of Psychiatric Research | Jan 30, 2018
Bogaty SER, et al. - This meta-analysis was performed to evaluate the cognitive differences between never-using patients (CANN-) and patients who currently use cannabis (CANN+) (i.e. during the CANN ± patients’ cannabis-using stage). Researchers particularly focused on young patients under the age of 25 years, the typical stage of both psychosis- and cannabis-onset. Results supported the previous findings indicating that compared to CANN-, CANN+ had poorer neurocognition; and that this is exacerbated with increasing age. Patients with CANN + vs CANN- demonstrated significant cognitive differences even at early-onset psychosis, which could suggest a different underlying mechanism towards psychosis for cannabis users.
