Meta-analysis of long-term efficacy and safety of hypofractionated radiotherapy in the treatment of early breast cancer
The Breast Nov 20, 2019
Andrade TRM, et al. - Researchers investigated whether hypofractionated radiotherapy affords a safe and effective management option for women with early stage breast cancer following breast conservative surgery. They analyzed ten publications of six randomized controlled trials that involved the comparison between conventional fractioning and hypofractioned radiotherapy. With regard to local recurrence, loco-regional recurrence, distance recurrence, disease-free survival and mortality, findings revealed no difference in the efficacy of conventional fractionation vs hypofractionated radiotherapy. On evaluating the occurrence of fibrosis, ischemia and ribs fractures, they found that there was no difference concerning safety. Better outcomes in relation to breast edema, telangiectasia, and acute skin radiation toxicity were provided by hypofractionated radiotherapy.
