Meta-analysis of histological margin positivity in the prediction of recurrence after Crohn’s resection
Diseases of the Colon and Rectum Jun 18, 2019
Ryan JM, et al. - Using meta-analytical techniques, researchers investigated how positive histological margins at the time of index resection influence disease recurrence. Reviewing a total of 176 citations, they included 18 studies comprising 1833 patients in this analysis. The mean rate of histopathological margin positivity was 41.7 ± 17.4% and the reported pooled mean follow-up was 69 ± 39 months. Recurrence was observed in correlation to the presence of involved histological margins at the time of index resection in Crohn’s disease. They identified plexitis as a promising marker for more aggressive disease.
