Meta-analysis of effect of modest (≥ 10%) weight loss in management of overweight and obese patients with atrial fibrillation
The American Journal of Cardiology Sep 21, 2019
Aldaas OM, Lupercio F, Han FT, et al. - In this systematic review, researchers investigated whether improved outcomes in overweight or obese patients with established atrial fibrillation (AF) can be achieved via modest weight loss of ≥ 10% of initial body weight. The included studies reported data on weight loss of ≥ 10% vs weight loss of < 10% or weight gain, and evaluated results including recurrence of AF as discovered by a Holter monitor, AF burden, and improvement in AF symptom severity. Overall, 5 studies representing 548 patients were analyzed. The investigators’ findings revealed a lower risk of recurrent AF, a decrease in AF burden, and improvement in AF symptom severity in correlation with weight loss.
