Meta-analysis comparing outcomes of smokers vs non-smokers with acute coronary syndrome undergoing percutaneous coronary intervention
American Journal of Cardiology Jun 29, 2018
Sharma SP, et al. - Researchers explored how smoking status is correlated with mortality and cardiovascular outcomes in patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS) treated with PCI by analyzing data from randomized controlled trials selected via a search in PubMed, EMBASE, CINAHL and Cochrane CENTRAL since inception through February 15, 2018. Data analysis was performed using random effects model. Overall, 17 randomized and non-randomized studies with a total of 55,491 patients with 21,989 smokers and 33,502 non-smokers were analyzed. They found that in these subjects, an association of smoking with lower mortality, but not major adverse cardiac events, was evident at 1-month and 1-year. This link with mortality was found to be strongly related to younger age, male sex, prevalence of diabetes mellitus and extent of coronary artery disease.
