Meta-analysis comparing outcomes of different transoral surgical modalities in management of oropharyngeal carcinoma
Head & Neck May 30, 2019
Ibrahim AS, et al. - Transoral laser surgery (TLS), transoral robotic surgery (TORS), and conventional direct transoral (DT) oropharyngectomy, the main current transoral surgical modalities for oropharyngeal carcinoma, were analyzed to define the optimal transoral surgical modality for oropharyneal carcinoma. Searching MEDLINE systematically through PubMed, researchers identified nine studies (404 patients) in TORS arm, five studies (498 patients) in TLS arm, and three studies (335 patients) in DT arm were included. Compared to TLS group, TORS and DT group had higher early T classification (T1-T2). Regarding the rate of invaded margin, post-operative oropharyngeal bleeding, temporary tracheotomy, and gastrostomy dependence, the groups were not significantly different. Hence no clear evidence of the superiority of any one modality was gained in this work.
